The Polar Express™ at Telford Steam Railway Review [2023]

Last year, we hopped aboard The Polar Express™ train ride at Telford Steam Railway for a truly magical Christmas experience. Inspired by Chris Van Allsburg’s beloved book and the 2004 film adaptation, this festive theatrical adventure is an absolute must for families looking to soak up the holiday spirit. It's a fun, entertaining and heart-warming experience. If you’re considering a visit this year, here’s everything you need to know!

Arriving at The Polar Express™ Train Ride

We parked at Ironbridge Park and Ride and got the free shuttle bus to Horeshay and Dawley station. Before the train ride, there was a short show taking place and it also gave you the opportunity to get a bite to eat (or you could bring your own refreshments) and pop to the toilet. I wouldn't arrive too early though as there isn't much to do before the experience.

All Aboard The Polar Express™ Experience

Shortly before our departure time, the staff in vintage uniforms guided us to the platform. Here, we had the chance to peek inside Hero Boy’s bedroom.

The atmosphere on the platform was electric. As we waited to board, all the children were already buzzing with excitement (and, let’s be honest, so were we!). Adding to the magic was an old-fashioned dressed man across from us, adding wood to a fire. The warm glow of the flames against the cool evening air and the dark sky created an enchanting scene that felt straight out of a Christmas card.

To top it all off, a snow machine sent flurries of “snow” drifting down over the platform. Watching the snow glisten under the lights was a truly magical moment. The combination of the firelight and the gentle snowfall, alongside clouds of steam from the train, made it impossible not to feel immersed in the story.

Everyone was patiently waiting for the first site of the steam train, and when the train’s whistle finally sounded, cheers erupted from the platform. It was time to climb aboard and embark on our journey to the North Pole.

Onboard The Polar Express™: A Magical Ride to the North Pole

As the train begins to chug along, the magic unfolds. Familiar tunes from the Polar Express™ soundtrack fill the air, setting the stage for what feels like a scene right out of the movie. The excitement is palpable, especially among the little ones who clutch their golden tickets in anticipation of the adventure ahead.

One of the most memorable moments happens shortly after departure. The lively team of singing chefs bursts into the aisle, delivering hot chocolate and cookies to every passenger. Their playful energy, complete with dancing, twirls, and cheerful chatter, mirrors the beloved scene from the film. The lively chefs use American accents, which adds authenticity to the storytelling. The hot chocolate, served in branded disposable cups, is warm and comforting—a perfect companion for the wintry ride. The cookies? Simply delightful and sure to please kids and adults alike!

We were impressed by how the team brought the story to life. Characters like the Conductor and the Hobo popped in to interact with passengers, and the singing chefs kept everyone entertained with songs and festive banter. Elijah loved showing his golden ticket to the Conductor for a classic “Punch, punch, punch!” moment.

As we approached the “North Pole,” we caught sight of Santa through the windows. Elijah's face lit up as Santa boarded the train. He took his time greeting each family, handing out silver sleigh bells as keepsakes—a lovely touch straight out of the story. We hang our silver bells from the experience on our Christmas tree!

We were also impressed by how Santa and the staff made each child feel special during their interactions. It’s these thoughtful details that make The Polar Express™ experience so memorable.

The return journey transforms into a lively sing-along session, with classic Christmas carols, such as Jingle Bells, and songs from The Polar Express™ soundtrack. The chefs and other characters once again lead the way, encouraging everyone to join in. The energy is infectious, and passengers of all ages often find themselves clapping, singing, and laughing together.

Amidst the music, the Conductor and other performers may pass through for one final round of interactions, ensuring that every passenger has had a chance to feel part of the story.

As the train pulls into the station, the cast gathers for a cheerful farewell. The final moments often feel bittersweet, as passengers leave The Polar Express™ behind.

Santa's Workshop

After a heartwarming return journey filled with festive carols led by the singing Chefs, the magic doesn’t end when the train pulls into the station. The next stop before the exit is Santa's Workshop.

Naughty and Nice Scanner at The Polar Express™ at Telford Steam Railway

Upon entering the workshop, kids (and the young at heart) can sit down to craft their own letter to Santa. You can test your holiday spirit with the Naughty or Nice Scanner and see if you’ve really been good this year and have been placed on the nice list.

Santa's Workshop is brimming with nostalgia, showcasing iconic items from The Polar Express™ such as the famous hot chocolate machine. This eye-catching display lets visitors get up close to the magical contraption that served delicious treats aboard the train. It’s a perfect photo spot for fans of the film.

You can also buy some The Polar Express™ merchandise in the souvenir shop area to take home.

What We Loved About The Polar Express™

  • The immersive storytelling: Every element, from the decorations to the characters, felt like stepping straight into the book and film.

  • Family-friendly fun: There was something for everyone, from toddlers to grandparents. Everyone was captivated by the performances, and even the adults couldn’t resist joining in with the singing!

  • The attention to detail: From the golden tickets to the themed refreshments, every aspect felt carefully planned to deliver a magical experience.

  • The sleigh bell keepsake: This was a lovely souvenir that we’ll treasure for years to come.

What Could Be Improved

While we had a fantastic experience, there are a couple of things to note:

  • Pre-Experience Festive Entertainment: Adding more engaging elements—like themed photo opportunities, interactive displays, or more entertainment before the main event—would help set the scene and build even more anticipation for the journey. When we visited, there were just a lot of people huddled inside the crowded marquee waiting to be called to the platform.

  • Booking for Odd-Numbered Groups: Each individual ticket covers two seats. While we understand the logistical reasons behind only allowing bookings in groups of two or four, it can be tricky for families with odd numbers. A bit more flexibility here would make it easier for all families to join in the fun.

  • Ticket Pricing: At around £32+ per person for standard tickets, the cost can add up for larger families. However, I do feel that it is worth the price for the experience, especially as some breakfast with Santa experiences and Christmas light trails are costing up to £25 per person this year.

Is The Polar Express™ at Telford Steam Railway Worth It?

Absolutely! If you’re a fan of The Polar Express™ story—or simply love festive experiences—this event is a must. It’s beautifully executed, full of Christmas magic, and perfect for creating lasting family memories.

I’d recommend wearing a lovely Christmas jumper or matching family pyjamas and bringing your camera to capture all the magical moments. And don’t forget: “The bell still rings for those who truly believe.”

FAQs About The Polar Express™ at Telford Steam Railway

How long does The Polar Express™ train ride last in Telford?

The entire experience lasts approximately 1.5 hours, including boarding, the train journey, and time spent interacting with the characters, as well as The Christmas Workshop at the end. The actual train ride takes just over an hour.

What should I wear?

The platform is outdoors but the train is heated, so I'd recommend wearing layers that you can take off. Many families also wear festive outfits or pyjamas, just like in the film, which adds to the fun!

Are refreshments and merchandise included in the ticket price?

Every passenger receives a cup of hot chocolate, a cookie, and a silver sleigh bell during the train journey. Premium ticket holders will also receive a special ceramic mug each and the special Polar Express™ bag (per pair of seats). Additional food and drinks are available for purchase at the station before the experience. There is also Polar Express™ merchandise that you can purchase in The Christmas Workshop at the end of the experience.

Is there an alternate cookie or dairy-free hot chocolate drink for those with allergies?

Yes! If you or a member of your party has an allergy, please let Telford Steam Railway know in advance. They can provide an allergen-free cookie alternative and a dairy-free hot chocolate option (made with soya or oat milk). Be sure to include this information in the “Additional Information” or dietary requirements box at checkout.

Can we take photos with Santa and the other characters?

While Santa moves through the train to greet each family and the Conductor and the singing and dancing Chefs perform throughout, there may not be time for formal posed photos. However, the interactions feel personal, and you can snap candid pictures during your time on the train.

Is The Polar Express™ suitable for toddlers or babies?

The experience is designed for families, and young children are welcome. That said, the immersive sound effects and lights might feel overwhelming for some very young children. Children 2 and under can ride free if they sit on an adult's lap—you must choose 'child on lap' during the booking process. Only one child 2 and under is permitted to travel per adult.

While some families did bring babies, I personally wouldn’t recommend it. The experience is quite loud, and the limited space in the train aisles—due to characters moving around and performing—makes it difficult to stand or move around to soothe a crying baby.

Can we bring strollers or prams onboard?

Due to the use of heritage railway coaches, Telford Steam Railway is unable to accommodate pushchairs on the carriages. However, pushchairs can be left on the departure platform, and staff will ensure they are ready for collection at the arrival station at the end of the journey.

Is there parking at Telford Steam Railway?

Telford Steam Railway does not have dedicated free parking onsite. However, it is conveniently accessible from the free park-and-ride facility at Ironbridge Park and Ride. A complimentary shuttle service is provided to and from the event. Shuttle buses run regularly in both directions throughout the event, with each trip taking approximately five minutes. Ironbridge Park and Ride is conveniently located at the Jiggers Bank Car Park. The postcode for your Sat Nav is TF4 3XH.

Is there disabled parking at Telford Steam Railway?

Unfortunately, there is no parking available at the railway itself. However, the shuttle buses to and from the event are equipped with disabled access and will transport passengers directly to the departure area at the start of the event. At the end of the event, the shuttle bus will collect all passengers and return them to the car park.

How do I book tickets for the Polar Express train ride?

Tickets can be booked online through the Telford Steam Railway website. Be sure to book early as the event sells out quickly—especially weekend slots.
